LSC Group was delighted to sponsor the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's (NDA) Risk Management Improvement Forum for a second year, an opportunity for risk specialists from around the NDA estate to gather and share the latest learning and best practice.
Dealing with the risks inevitably associated with ageing nuclear facilities is a fundamental part of the NDA's mission, and formed part of the discussions led by the NDA's Chief Executive John Clarke at a recent conference.
Around 40 senior executives from the NDA estate, the Site Licence Companies and the regulatory authorities attended the annual Risk Management Conference and agreed that risk should continue as a priority focus for the whole estate, particularly in the light of recent high-profile cyber-attacks and the current international climate.
The NDA's Head of Portfolio Management Office Chris Watson opened the event, emphasising that the challenge for the industry in this critical topic was gaining a complete understanding of the numerous risks, and developing processes for prioritising and addressing them.
He also outlined the importance of the Board and Executive in setting the right 'tone from the top' and ensuring that risks are managed in line with the Board's risk appetite.
The event, was the first to be organised by the newly formed Nuclear Industry Risk Management Association (NIRMA), whose membership, as well as the NDA, SLCs and regulators, also includes EDF and the Institute of Risk Management. NIRMA was established during 2015 to ensure good risk management practice is shared across the industry and to influence improved risk management standards.
Phil Jakubowski, Senior Risk Management Consultant, LSC Group, delivered a keynote presentation focusing on what the Nuclear Industry could learn from Defence, and trends in the wider Risk Management Profession. Phil introduced novel concepts for analysing complex programmes in order to inform risk identification, how to shift attention towards risk response action and methods for risk assurance of large procurements. He also brought the conference up-to-speed with the latest thought-leadership themes being explored by the IRM, the Risk Management professional body.
Commenting on the event Phil Jakubowski said “Following on from the success of last year's NDA Risk Forum, we were pleased to be invited back to support the event for a second year. LSC Group brings vast experience from a variety of regulated industries and is proud to support the NDAs objectives to embed risk management across the estate. We look forward to continuing this support over the coming months and years.”.
The NDA's risk manager Richard James added: “Risk management has increased its profile over the last year and continues to be an NDA Executive priority. The NDA vision is to ensure risk management is embedded into the way that we work. He also added how the conference allowed risk practitioners from across the industry to share their achievements, challenges and priorities. Together we will continue to drive forward risk management standards.”
